Worcester GEAR UP Student Wins Scholarships

Gloria Mensah, a junior at North High School in Worcester and a member of the GEAR UP class of 2014, recently won two highly competitive scholarships.  She was one of only 105 students in the nation to receive a Horatio Alger Scholarship and one of 25 students in Massachusetts to receive a Christian A. Herter Scholarship.

“I originally went into GEAR UP for help with the Common Application, but I also learned about scholarships.  If GEAR UP hadn’t helped me, I would not have learned about the Horatio Alger Scholarship, which I won! I am very grateful to GEAR UP for that and all of their help.”

Horatio Alger need-based scholarships are given to highly motivated students who exhibit integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education.

The state-supported Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship Program works with guidance counselors, social workers, clergy and educators to nominate semi-finalists who have overcome major adversity in their lives. Each year, 25 students in the 10th and 11th grades are selected to receive up to 50 percent of their calculated need at the U.S. college of their choice.

Gloria also participated in the CSI: Worcester program (Collegiate Success Institute) in 2013.
