National GEAR UP Week (September 19-23) was celebrated by all of MassEdCO's GEAR UP locations at middle and high schools in Boston, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, New Bedford, Springfield and Worcester.
National GEAR UP Week raises awareness of the program to students, teachers and parents, touting the positive impact that GEAR UP is having on the school community. It also provides teachers with another opportunity to be positive role models and share their educational accomplishments with their students.
Activities at North High School in Worcester included a scholarship application raffle with prizes such as NHS attire and yearbooks. Other giveaways were a GEAR UP pamphlet detailing program goals and staff, a flyer for teachers to hang in their classrooms that lists the college(s) they attended and what they studied. All staff in the building were invited to wear a shirt or sweatshirt on Friday from their college and share some of the things they learned there.
