Massachusetts Financial Literacy Summit: Financing a Postsecondary Education

MassEdCO presented a FREE spring summit in collaboration with Reach Higher Massachusetts.

Funding for this event was provided by the Lumina Foundation Strategy Labs.

 

Focus of Event:  Massachusetts State Treasurer Deb Goldberg recently released a report from her Task Force on Financial Literacy, A Roadmap to Economic Empowerment. The summit explored the task force's recommendations relevant to financing a postsecondary education with the goal of equipping more students and families with better financial decision-making skills.

Representatives from school districts, nonprofit organizations, state agencies, and local and state elected officials attended. After time for a continental breakfast and networking, MassEdCO CEO Pamela Boisvert welcomed attendees and introduced State Treasurer Deb Goldberg, who gave opening remarks.

Two panel discussions followed:

Panel 1 - Policy Discussion: Task Force on Financial Literacy - A Roadmap to Economic Empowerment (the Task Force's  report and recommendations). 

Moderator: Mark Bilotta, Founder, CollegeValue, LLC, & Chair, MassEdCO Board of Directors. Panel members: Dr. Clantha McCurdy, Senior Deputy Commissioner, Access & Student Financial Assistance, Mass. Dept. of Higher Ed.; State Sen. Michael Moore, Chair, Joint Committee on Higher Education; Paul C. Combe, President & CEO, American Student Assistance. Followed by Q & A Session.

Panel 2 - Where We Are and Where We Need to Go: Practitioners' Responses to Task Force Recommendations. 

Moderator & panel member: Julie Shields-Rutyna, Director of College Planning, Mass. Educational Financing Authority.  Other panel members: Todd Ostrowski, math teacher, Baird Middle School, Ludlow & member, Treasurer’s Task Force on Financial Literacy; Yiming Shuang, Director of Operations, Inversant. Followed by Participant Participation Session.
